Sat Nam is a mantra that we use when we practice Kundalini Yoga. A mantra is a sound we use to project the mind on a particular frequency.img_3459

When you speak this mantra, the word Sat rhymes with but. Nam rhymes with mom. Also, when you speak the mantra, be aware of your tongue. In English language, when we pronounce a “t” sound, the teeth hit together. When you utter the “t” in Sat, you’ll want to put your tongue into it; allow the tongue to hit the roof of the mouth.

Why is this important?

Kundalini Yoga is a precise science, and the mantra will be most effective if chanted precisely. When chanting, be sure to bring the sounds up from your navel point, through the heart, through the throat to strike the roof of the mouth, and thus stimulate the hypothalamus in the brain. Chanting mantra is not a matter of making sounds, but a yogic experience of body awareness.

Sat Nam is often translated as ‘true name’ or ‘true vibration.’ Sat Nam is also translated as ‘Truth is my identity.’

But to really grasp the meaning of Sat Nam, the dictionary meaning is not much help. Instead, to understand Sat Nam, turn to physics and then have an experience of your own consciousness.

If you take a string and stretch it and pluck it or strike it or rub it, the string releases a sound that fills the air with sound waves. A violin is a sophisticated model of this. A symphony gets even more sophisticated. Similarly, when you sit with a long, tall spine and vibrate the sounds Sat Nam from the root of your spine through the brain and into your auric field, you are a-tuning the symphony that is your own being to the infinite truth of all being. So Sat Nam is less of a word or expression; it is an experience of the true essence of you aligning with all Truth. This truth is not a matter of true and false or right and wrong. This truth has more to do with grooving within the essence of all that is true.

Try this: Close your eyes. Focus the eyeballs to the third eye point between the eyebrows. Inhale and mentally vibrate the sound Sat; then exhale and mentally vibrate the sound Nam. Continue breathing and focus on mentally vibrating the mantra for three to eleven minutes. When you complete the exercise, witness how you feel.

It’s so simple, but brings such great benefits.

Sat Nam is often referred to as a “seed mantra,” a mantra that resonates with the wisdom that says within the seed is contained all the knowledge of the fully grown tree. So, when you plant such a seed within your consciousness, over and over and over again, your soul awakens and you are given your destiny.

Sat Nam Fest is a festival of Truth that will bring you into alignment with your truth. The festival is a great opportunity to plant seeds in your consciousness, seeds that have the knowledge of your full blossoming, your full potential.

Now, press your left and right hands together at the palms and bring the thumbs to your sternum. Bow your head slightly. Inhale. And go ahead and say it:

Sat Nam!

Now doesn’t that feel sweet and graceful?
